Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. (DPS), incorporated on October 24, 2007, is an integrated brand owner, manufacturer and distributor of non-alcoholic beverages in the United States, Canada and Mexico with a diverse portfolio of flavored (non-cola) carbonated soft drinks (CSDs) and non-carbonated beverages (NCBs), including ready-to-drink teas, juices, juice drinks and mixers. The Company operates in three segments: Beverage Concentrates, Packaged Beverages and Latin America Beverages.     Doctor Pepper Snapple Group Inc. (DPS) is a mature business, and a remarkably shareholder friendly one at that. The dividend yield is currently a hefty 3.41%, and the company has bought back 6% of its shares through the past three years. An investor can sensibly look for income and capital appreciation with long-term horizons. The stock goes ex-dividend in the near future, on Sept. 12, and scrutiny is appropriate.

    In contrast, soda sales are falling. Coke's soda sales were down 4% in the second quarter, Dr Pepper Snapple Group (NYSE: DPS  ) sold�3% less, and Pepsi's sales have fizzled in the mid-single-digit range. And Beverage Digest says says per capita consumption of soda has been on the wane since 1998.

    Changing consumer habits are influenced by other beverage options
    Dwindling diet soda sales are bad news for PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) and its competitors Coca-Cola� (NYSE: KO  ) and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group (NYSE: DPS  ) , which derive a quarter or more of their U.S. sales from soft drinks. In the third-quarter earnings call, PepsiCo chairman Indra Nooyi noted that "a fundamental shift in consumer habits and behaviors" is taking place within the beverage segment. In addition to the artificial sweetener issue, more beverage options have become available and this has played a major part in the loss of consumer interest in diet sodas.
