Hot Consumer Companies To Invest In 2014

Big tech seems to get smaller and smaller, both in terms of sales and number of employees. International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) said it would rebalance its workforce. Texas Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ: TXN) announced it would cut 1,100 people. These announcements come shortly after Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) said it would fire 5,000 people. While job cuts from the recession may have ended, old tech cannot afford to hold on to its workers.

IBM needs to cut staff. Revenue in the fourth quarter dropped 5% to $27.7 billion. Its old line System and Technology segment lost 26% of its revenue, down to $4.2 billion. The segment contains much of IBM’s hardware sales. Some of IBM’s revenue has gone to newer age companies like Oracle Corp. (NYSE: ORCL). That trend appears to have continued.

At Texas Instruments, revenue barely rose to $3.03 billion from $2.98 billion in the same quarter a year ago. The company blamed sales at its Embedded Processing business, although they grew slightly. TI has battled to get into newer consumer electronics devices. Arm Holdings PLC (NASDAQ: ARMH) and Intel have pressured TI’s sales in one of its largest segments.

And that, unmistakably, is a brand. Although the value of a brand is intangible and cannot be measured in dollars, it is one of the most valuable assets a company can have. This is what differentiates a product from Coca-Cola (KO), Kraft Foods Group (KRFT), Nestle (NSRGY.PK) or McDonald's (MCD) from just another unknown manufacturer of these very much essential goods and services. In my eyes, brands are as good as a promise to consumers, which differentiates the product from the rest, and promises that the standard of that certain product will be much better than that of another manufacturer. Without this brand that people trust in and are loyal to, there will not be substantial profits and future growth for the company. Do you think Warren Buffett would have bought out Heinz (HNZ) without its world-famous brand name? Definitely not! It would be as good as just another ketchup brand left on the shelf.

I do not mention these things to discourage you from international stocks. I have been purchasing BP (BP) between $39-$43, and I will eventually purchase Anheuser-Busch (BUD), Nestle (NSRGY.PK), Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B), and two or three other international companies when the stars line up. My point is that you should not feel an obligation to own international stocks simply for diversification's sake. If you find a good international stock with a business model you understand and it trades at an attractive price, then great. You should buy it. But owning international stocks does not have to be a necessary part of your strategy. Despite what Mankiw advises in the New York Times, you can build a diversified collection of "global stocks" simply by investigating where certain American multinationals generate the bulk of their sales and earnings.

Mark Lennihan/AP NEW YORK -- Coca-Cola's (KO) fourth-quarter profit fell as the world's biggest beverage maker once again sold less soda in North America. The maker of Sprite, Dasani and Vitaminwater water said Tuesday that sales volume declined 1 percent in North America. That reflected a 3 percent decline in soda, which offset improved performance by noncarbonated drinks such as Powerade. Last week, PepsiCo (PEP) also said its soda volume fell in the "mid-single digits." Coca-Cola also saw slower growth in emerging markets such as India and China. Overall, global sales volume rose just 1 percent in the quarter as a result. The Atlanta-based company said it would intensify its cost-cutting to produce another $1 billion in savings by 2016, much of which would be reinvested into marketing. "We know our business responds to marketing," CEO Muhtar Kent said in a call with reporters. While some jobs may be lost as a result of the cost cuts, he noted that other jobs might be created. Although Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are tapping emerging markets for growth and sell a wide array of beverages, pressure is mounting for the two companies to figure out how to get soda sales moving in the right direction at home. Americans have been cutting back on soda for years as beverage aisles have grown increasingly crowded with options such as Monster energy drinks or Sparkling Ice waters. Soda is also blamed for making people fat and, more recently, industry executives have blamed concerns about artificial sweeteners for a decline in sales of diet sodas. In fact, Kent said the soda decline in North America over the past year was "largely due to softer Diet Coke volumes." But he stressed that the company was working with "credible third parties" to address any "misperceptions" about soda, but didn't specify whom. He expressed confidence that soda in North America can still grow and just needs improved marketing, innovation and on-the-ground sales execution. Coca-Cola is tes

Alamy You can never know in advance all the news that will move the market in a given week, but some things you can see coming. From food giants to tech bellwethers, here are some of the things that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday -- Organic Growth: The market for organic foods has never been hotter, and Annie's (BNNY) is there to cash in on consumers craving more natural edibles. It makes organic pastas, crackers, frozen pizzas, and other food products. Annie's reports after the market closes on Monday. It should be another quarter of healthy growth. Analysts see revenue and earnings growing by roughly 20 percent for the quarter that ended in December. The one thing that investors will need to watch out for is that Annie's has missed Wall Street's profit targets in the previous two quarters. Tuesday -- In Control: One of last month's big winners was Control4 (CTRL). Shares of the home automation specialist soared 29 percent in January, bucking the market, which took a bit of a tumble. And you don't have to look too hard to spot the catalyst behind its rally. Google's (GOOG) acquisition of smart thermostat maker Nest drew attention to Control4 as another play on automated home technology. The thinking here is that if Google is buying into the niche of Web-fueled home automation, other dot-com giants may consider acquiring Control4 to establish a presence in this new battlefield. Control4 reports on Tuesday. It's unlikely to admit that it's receiving buyout interest on the heels of Google's move, but you know it's going to be asked. Wednesday -- The Cisco kid: It may seem hard to believe, but there was a time when Cisco (CSCO) was this country's most valuable company. Just before the dot-com bubble popped, the leading provider of routers, switches, and other networking gear commanded the market's largest market cap. Then again, at the time we thought that anything Web-related was worth a whole lot of money, and Cisco was the co

Both of these firms have tried to adapt to the pressure stemming from rival discounters, with varying degrees of success. Meanwhile, Saucony gives Wolverine an entry into the athletic shoe industry, but Nike (NYSE: NKE  ) continues to dominate the industry with its strong gross margins. In order to disrupt Nike's strength, Wolverine will need to emphasize Saucony's focus on running shoes, aiming to capture business from runners who value attention to their specific needs rather than Nike's broad array of shoes covering multiple sports.
