Hot Blue Chip Companies To Own For 2014

With the first quarter's earnings season essentially in the books, the bull run we've seen from the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) over the past weeks ran out of fuel as the blue chips finished down slightly by 0.1%, or 19 points.

On a day with no major earnings releases or significant economic reports, acquisitions stole the headlines, specifically Yahoo!'s (NASDAQ: YHOO  ) purchase of the blogging site Tumblr for $1.1 billion. The deal represents CEO Marissa Mayer's first major acquisition since taking the helm last year, and the blogging service brings Yahoo! 300 million unique visitors a month, about half of which access the site through mobile devices. Elsewhere, drugmaker Actavis said it would purchase Warner Chilcott in an all-stock transaction for $5 billion, and Internet security specialist Websense jumped 29% after agreeing to be taken private by Vista Equity Group for $907 million. The deals helped pump some lifeblood into equities as the Dow was up as much 0.25% at midday, but the rally faded in the afternoon.

Stocks are surging today following a benign inflation reading that has helped soothe investor worries over imminent Fed rate hikes. E.I. Dupont de Nemours (DD), ExxonMobil (XOM), Home Depot (HD), International Business Machines (IBM) and Caterpillar (CAT) gained.

The latest catalyst was the poor economic news out of China, which spurred liquidation in many of the emerging markets, further depressing their currencies. Several notable earnings' misses from several stocks, like International Business Machines (IBM) and Kansas City Southern (KSU), made many nervous about their portfolios as KSU was down 14% on Friday.

Furthermore, back in April, the Dow's worst performer was IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) which lost 10.11%. The reason that matters is that the Dow is a price-weighted index, which means that stocks with higher prices have a larger impact on the index. Since IBM represents 10% of the Dow's total score, when it lost 10% in April, it singlehandedly cut around 160 points from the index, or around half of its loss that week.

Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) also stunk up the DJIA with its earnings forecast looking down over 20% from the same quarter a year ago. So what if refining margins were good. This stock was at a loss of 1.8% in the final minutes of trading, down to $121.06 from a 52-week high of $127.83.

Chevron provides essential energy products and services to a wide range of companies operating in different industries around the world. The stock has been on a bullish run for the last several years and is now trading near all-time high prices. Advisors' Opinion:

However, the tobacco industry has been a great hunting ground for investors. While no tobacco companies pay as high a dividend as Vector Group, long-term investors would do well to look at Altria in the U.S. or Phillip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) . Both were part of the original Phillip Morris conglomerate that split up around 2008 by spinning off Kraft and Phillip Morris International. Both businesses are leaders in their respective markets -- Altria in the U.S. and Phillip Morris the world, excluding China and the U.S -- and have exceptionally high-returning businesses. This is in part due to both having one of the top brands in the world with Marlboro. For dividend investors, the key part is that both have long-term histories of steadily increasing their dividends. If I had to choose just one, while Altria has a higher yield than Phillip Morris (4.9% vs. 3.9%), I would go with Phillip Morris. The company has better growth prospects and a lower payout ratio, and the business is far more diversified in terms of legal risk, whereas Altria could be hurt by any laws or rulings that go against tobacco companies in the U.S.

GuruFocus: Youe buying a lot of global brands, and they all had in common emerging market growth, like Proctor and Gamble (PG), Pepsi (PEP), Philip Morris (PM), Johnson and Johnson (JNJ). Is that was a conscious investment theme or is that a coincidence?

  • [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET]

There are definitely concerns for Phillip Morris, which include decreased market share in many areas and poor debt management. However, up until this point, Phillip Morris has done a good job rewarding its shareholders. While history usually repeats itself, that not necessarily an all-positive in this case. Phillip Morris didn hold up well in 2008/early 2009. If a similar environment were to present itself again, then Phillip Morris wouldn be a top option regardless of the impressive yield. In the meantime, Phillip Morris is an OUTPERFORM.
