WASHINGTONuropean Central Bank President Mario Draghi on Saturday ratcheted up his warnings about the strong euro, saying a further rise in the exchange rate would trigger additional monetary easing to keep inflation from falling too low.
strengthening of the exchange rate requires further monetary stimulus. That is an important dimension for our price stability,Mr. Draghi said at a news conference during meetings of the International Monetary Fund.
Reuters Enlarge Image Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank.Mr. Draghi comments are notable because central bankers typically shy away from commenting on exchange rates set by the financial markets. But he has highlighted in recent weeks the effect the strong euro has had on inflation, and has said it is an increasingly important factor on the ECB assessment of price trends.

In the latest move in a broad deleveraging effort, Spanish telecom incumbent Telefonica (NYSE: TEF ) has divested one of its European subsidiaries. The company announced that it has reached agreement to sell Telefonica Ireland to Hong Kong-based conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Group. The potential total price is 850 million euros ($1.1 billion), 780 million euros ($1.0 billion) of which will be handed over at the closing of the transaction while 70 million euros($92 million) will take the form of a deferred payment to be transferred when certain financial objectives are met.

Working with incomplete information is something markets are used to, though, despite the volatility that it can produce. AT&T (NYSE: T ) posted minimal gains after Spain's Telefonica (NYSE: TEF ) denied rumors that AT&T was looking to buy out the European telecom giant. With its already massive position in the U.S. wireless market, AT&T will have to look abroad for substantial growth opportunities. With Telefonica having chosen to cut its dividend temporarily in order to reallocate capital, a buyout might have been good news for its shareholders; Telefonica stock is up 3.5% despite its denial. Still, given the amount of money involved -- $93 billion, according to one report -- it would take a massive commitment to get the deal done.

Roger Conrad: Well, one that I read about actually in the very first issue of Conrad's Utility Investor is a company called Telefonica (TEF). This one is a company that has had a pretty tough several years.

Assuming it delivers on its outlook for 2014, its current free cash flow yield is a very enticing 20%. This isn a growth stock, but its brands still possess hidden value. As cheap stocks go, it very attractive.

Bubbly activity in these developing geographies can create large opportunities for many London-listed firms. Today, I am looking atBritish American Tobacco (LSE: BATS ) (NYSE: BTI) and assessing whether its operations in these regions are likely to underpin solid earnings growth.

Imperial trades cheaply and pays a great, sustainable and for-ever-growing 4.5% cash dividend yield. The company's 2014 10.4 times P/E multiple represents a 40% discount to what most European consumer staples sell for. Besides, the owner of brands such as Davidoff and Gauloises, trades at a much more conservative level than its direct tobacco peers. Philip Morris International (PM) and British American Tobacco (BTI) sell for 2014 15 and 14.2 times earnings, respectively.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Trefis]
The oil majors BP Plc. (BP) and Exxon Mobil (XOM) seem to be playing the growing dispute in Iraq between the Kurdistan regional government [KRG] and the central government quite differently. Exxon angered the central government by signing a more lucrative exploration agreement with the KRG and is in the process of wrapping up its operations in Southern Iraq. On the other hand, BP is sticking with the central government honoring its earlier agreement to develop Rumaila, Iraq’s largest oil field. In fact, recently it even agreed to develop the Kirkuk oil field, which lies in the swathe of land over which the Iraqi central government and the KRG are locked in a dispute. While Exxon is betting on higher control of the KRG over its oil reserves and exports, BP is sticking to its rather stable stream of cash from the central government, in the hope of better terms on future deals. However, both of them face huge operating risks in a country that holds ~10% of the global oil reserves [Statistical Review of World Energy 2013, bp.com].

Given current oil prices, that means several projects are barely profitable, leading some oil sands operators to reconsider new ventures. For instance, Suncor Energy (NYSE: SU ) , one of the largest oil sands producers by output, has been mulling over the profitability of three mining-related ventures jointly proposed with French oil major Total (NYSE: TOT ) .

Bowing out of Egypt
It's also noteworthy that Egypt shares a western border with Libya, which is a significant producer, but where chaos and contretemps also reign. Is it any wonder, then, that Chevron (NYSE: CVX ) announced on Tuesday that it will unload its Egyptian downstream operations, including 66 service stations and a couple of oil depots, to Total (NYSE: TOT ) ? The French company is also buying the retail assets in the land of the Sphinx from Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-B ) . Perhaps it knows something of which the rest of us are unaware.
