Why Americans Can't Lose Weight

By most measures, close to a third of Americans are overweight if the scientific BMI measurement is used. Some smaller portion are “morbidly obese”, at the far end of the yardstick of those who weight may cause severe health problems.

Most research by both academic institutions, and government bodies like the CDC, claim that the cost of obesity runs into the tens of billions of dollars a year, due to diabetes, heart disease, and the crippling impact on joints. Obesity’s medical side effects drive American healthcare costs higher, and there are no data which show the obesity problem improving.

New data from Gallup shows that many Americans who are obese are aware of the condition, but many fewer do anything meaningful to help themselves. More astonishingly, some people who are obese do not admit it.

Top 5 Gold Stocks To Watch For 2014

Gallup reports:

Americans’ desire to lose weight does not necessarily translate into their doing anything to achieve it. While 51% of adults want to lose weight, barely half as many (25%) say they are seriously working toward that goal. This discrepancy between Americans’ weight-loss desires and behavior has existed for years.

And,

More Americans want to lose weight than actually see themselves as overweight. Overall, 36% describe themselves as overweight, on par with 34% in 2012, but down slightly from most years since 2002 and from 1990. This includes 34% of men and 39% of women who say they are overweight.

Americans are much more likely to say their weight is “about right” than to say they are “overweight.” It is possible that that some adults are reluctant to label themselves as overweight or lean toward saying they are “about right” if they are only a few pounds overweight.

The information should give medical experts and government officials who are concerned with health and the effects on the U.S. budget with an uneasy feeling. So far, there has been no set of programs which has been put together to raise the awareness of obesity problems. And, even if there were, Americans might not change their habits even if they were better informed.

Oil Stocks BP & OXY Lead The Way This Earnings Season

oil stocks bp stock oxyWe're in the thick of earnings season for the energy sector and BP (BP) and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) were the latest oil stocks to report earnings.

And both oil stocks did so with gusto.

On the backs of higher production and prices per barrel, the oil stocks showed why the majors are in a league of their own. And more importantly for BP and OXY specifically, the earnings show just how far the duo are into their respective transformations

For OXY and BP stock investors, the earnings reports for both oil stocks could be a precursor to greater things down the road.

BP Stock Sweetens Its Dividend

For beaten-down and beleaguered BP stock, the latest earnings report could be a sign of more positive things from one of the most well-known oil stocks. Ultimately, BP showed a 34% decrease in net profits vs. a year ago. But while at first blush that may seem bad, the truth is that number isn’t as terrible as it may seem.

The key for the oil stock is that BP managed to beat analysts' projections by a wide margin.

British Petroleum reported third-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.17 per share on a replacement cost basis, excluding non-operating items. The oil stock's results surpassed the analyst consensus estimates of just 97 cents. Much of that increase was due to higher average price of oil throughout the quarter.

BP sold oil for an average of $100.66 per barrel and natural gas for $5.01 per thousand cubic feet for the quarter. That's versus $99 and $4.77, respectively for the previous quarter. Overall price realization rose 3.5% to $62.80 per barrel of oil equivalent. On the whole, the oil stock saw an 1.3% increase in profits from its upstream, as production at BP for the third quarter was 3.17 million barrels of oil equivalents a day.

These profits and gains managed to outweigh issues at its refining sector, which posted lower margins. BP was also encouraged by its progress on the production front and legal battle resulting from its Deep Horizon rig disaster/oil spill.

That prompted BP to raise its quarterly dividend by 5.6% to 57 cents a share. That gives BP stock a forward yield of just under 5%.

OXY Sees U.S. Production Growth

Like BP, oil stock rival Occidental Petroleum succeeded on the earnings front, built on the back of higher production and oil prices.

Gains for OXY came from higher oil production in the U.S. production, which was the equivalent of 476,000 barrels of oil per day. That was up about 7,000 barrels per day for the year ago quarter as well as also higher than the previous quarter's production. That increase here at home helped offset lower production in the Middle East and North Africa — traditionally the bread-n-butter for OXY. Total production for the oil stock was 767,000 barrels per day.

The fourth largest U.S. oil stock OXY also saw higher prices for that higher production.

Beating BP on average cost per barrel, Occidental was paid $103.95 per barrel for crude. That's a jump of nearly 8% versus last year's numbers. OXY also saw a 32% gain in its average selling price for more for natural gas.

Adding in OXY's 22% reduction in drilling costs and the oil stock produced a third-quarter profit of $1.58 billion — 15% more than a year ago. Adjusted profits per share came in at $1.96. That beat analyst estimates for the oil stock by roughly 6 cents. Meanwhile, OXY revenue rose 8% to $6.45 billion, also beating analysts' projections.

While Occidental didn't reward shareholders with a dividend increase, OXY stock has rallied this year about 27% based on the oil stock’s improving condition.

These Oil Stocks Set The Pace

Given that both BP and OXY reported better numbers based on higher average energy prices, odds are the rest of the oil stocks will do the same. That could make the overall sector a big buy in the weeks ahead.

For investors, oil stocks are certainly shining this earnings season. OXY and BP, as well previous reports by Schlumberger (SLB) and Halliburton (HAL), are proving that fact.

As of this writing, Aaron Levitt did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

Meet The Magic Indicator: The LEI Don't Lie

Top 5 High Tech Companies To Buy Right Now

It just won't happen. Except for the euphoric end of bull market peaks, folks always fear recession ahead—more so right now due to the government shutdown hangover and the eventual end of quantitative easing.

Relax! There is a basically foolproof technique to know if a recession may come any time soon. Right now that method says, "No way."

Once upon a time, way back even before John Maynard Keynes was first expounding his "general" theory, Wesley C. Mitchell of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) was less interested in theories than in reliable indicators foretelling expansion versus contraction. Mitchell's 1930s research developed the NBER's leading economic indicator series (the LEI)—more recently managed by the Conference Board. It's now called the Leading Economic Index but still known as the LEI.

Modified minutely since then, it has always fallen many months before any recession—always! A fall doesn't ensure we'll have a recession, but if it doesn't fall, we won't. It's high and skyrocketing now—and rising in the other 11 countries and Europe for which it's calculated. So relax! Believe in it, not the nonsensical, fear-based babble you hear. The LEI don't lie. Visit the Conference Board's Web site to check it out yourself.

Were the "shutdown" or "the default crisis"—or anything else—to cause recession you would see it long beforehand in a falling LEI. It has ten simple components, none of which, ironically, is government spending. One is the rate spread I detailed in the Oct. 28 and Jan. 21 issues. Another is the S&P 500 itself. But then, I've been explaining all year why this bull market will endure. So enjoy it with good stocks like these six:

Top Financial Stocks To Buy Right Now

After consulting with outside financial advisors, in conjunction with the Elan (NYSE: ELN  ) board of directors and executive management team, the Ireland-based biotechnology company has determined the recent $12.50-a-share buyout offer from Royalty Pharma undervalues select Elan assets by as much as $4.3 billion, the company announced Wednesday.

According to Elan, its multiple sclerosis treatment Tysabri has an underlying value of approximately $11.85 a share, and possibly as much as $17.15 a share, based on Berenberg Bank estimates of global Tysabri sales. Tysabri values do not take into account operating expenses, and include sales estimates through 2016.

In addition to the Tysabri value calculations, Elan's press release suggests the value of its cash position is equal to $3.65 a share based on its pro forma net cash position of approximately $2 billion, as of March 31. The combination of cash per share and its Tysabri asset that the company has put forward values Elan between $15.50 and $20.80 a share.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Chegg, Inc. (NYSE: CHGG) was the IPO disappointment of the week. Sure it has a lot of competition, but IPOs are supposed to be on fire now. Chegg managed to gain almost 3% on Friday to close at $9.13, but one must remember that the IPO price at $12.50 never saw the $12.50 open. The stock opened at $9.80 and closed at $8.88 on the first day, a move which will baffle IPO investors of growth companies who are buying an IPO at a time when major indexes are hitting new all-time highs. By the way, GSV Capital Corp. (NASDAQ: GSVC) was a runner-uploser along with Chegg, as this fund owned shares of Twitter and Chegg pre-IPO. The stock price was above $16 before the Twitter IPO and is now down to $12.03 after another 8.8% drop on Friday. Bye-bye.

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

A third angle to consider is the business development company GSV Capital Corp. (NASDAQ: GSVC). This is public and it owns a slug of Twitter shares. Its recent peak was $16.90 and the shares were recently down at $15.60. This stock rose into the Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) IPO as well, only to roll over as Facebook’s shares did. The portfolio update from GSV on October 3 showed the following: Twitter, Inc. was shown to have a fair value of GSV Capital investment of $37.6 million, or about 15.1% of net assets at the time. If the IPO price has risen, so has that value. Another hot upcoming IPO of Chegg, Inc. was shown to have a fair value of GSV investment of $14.0 million, worth some 5.6% of net assets. Be advised that this stock has doubled since mid-summer, and shares fell rapidly from $18 down to $10 after the Facebook IPO.

  • [By Hibah Yousuf]

Shares of GSV Capital (GSVC), a publicly traded fund that invests in "high growth" private companies, rallied almost 13% Friday. GSV said it holds 1.9 million shares of Twitter as of June 30. Twitter is the fund's biggest holding, at 15% of the total portfolio.

  • [By Chris Versace, Editor, PowerTrend Brief and PowerTrend Profits]

I tend to avoid IPOs, per se, but every so often there's an opportunity to climb into a position before the company goes public, and in this case, that's GSV Capital, which is a venture portfolio company, publicly-traded, ticker symbol (GSVC) and they have about 15% of their holdings in Twitter.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tim Melvin]

Price appears to share my enthusiasm for smaller bank stocks, as he currently own 19 small regional and community banks. He has been buying them consistently over the past few years, and I think he sees the same consolidation wave and shareholder value increase in the future that I do. He added to one position this quarter, buying more shares of Clifton Savings Bank (CSBK), the mutual holding company for the 11-branch bank in northern New Jersey. It looks like the bank trades for 1.9 times book value, but after the second-step conversion process is completed, the shares will trade at a slight discount to book. The bank is in excellent condition with an equity-to-assets ratio of almost 18 and nonperforming assets at just 0.53% of total assets.

American Capital Agency (NASDAQ: AGNC  ) is down over 15% over the last 30 days, and mREIT giant Annaly Capital Management (NYSE: NLY  ) has ticked down roughly 10%.

  • [By Sean Williams]

American Capital Agency buys agency- (i.e., U.S. government-) backed mortgage-backed securities and makes money by levering its portfolio as much as is reasonable to take advantage of the net interest margin between what it borrows at and what it lends at. In recent months, these interest spreads for the two largest agency-backed mREITs, Annaly Capital Management (NYSE: NLY  ) and American Capital, have been shrinking due to the Fed's ongoing bond-buying activity, which is removing many MBS' buying opportunities from the marketplace. In addition, as my Foolish colleague David Hanson pointed out last week, American Capital reported a comprehensive loss of $557 million, meaning its market securities lost value in the first quarter. In short, mREITs aren't without their fair share of risks.

Gap’s 3rd-quarter profit up 9.4%

NEW YORK — Gap reported a 9.4% increase in third-quarter earnings as the fashion retailer's turnaround continues.

The company, which operates Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic, also reaffirmed its full-year profit guidance and said it's increasing its stock buyback authorization by $1 billion.

The results, announced late Thursday, are among a few bright spots in a third-quarter earnings season that has many retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Kohl's Corp. lowering their outlook in an uncertain economy. Teen retailer Abercrombie & Fitch reported earlier Thursday a loss in its third quarter, dragged down in part by charges related to closing its Gilly Hicks stores. The teen retailer's sales softened and it said sales weakness continues in the fourth quarter.

Gap's push into new designer collaborations, brighter fashions and livelier stores have helped invigorate sales since early last year, but the holiday shopping season is expected to fiercely competitive with stores ramping up discounts to grab shoppers.

The San Francisco-based chain posted net income of $337 million, or 72 cents per share in the three-month period ended Nov. 2. That compares with $308 million, or 63 cents per share, last year.

Revenue rose 2.8% to $3.98 billion.

Analysts were expecting 71 cents per share on revenue of $3.98 billion, according to FactSet estimates.

Revenue at stores opened at least a year rose 1 percent, compared with a 6 percent increase a year ago. By division, Gap's results were up 1 percent, while Banana Republic's metric was down 1 percent. Old Navy was unchanged from a year ago.

The measure is considered a key indicator of a retailer's health.

A year ago, Gap announced a management overhaul to help it respond more quickly to shifting tastes around the world. The change put the North American, international, online, outlet and franchise divisions under a single global executive for each of the company's brands. The company also formed a new innova! tion and digital strategy team.

The company said Thursday that it repurchased approximately 20 million shares for about $790 million during the third quarter, completing all but $100 million of its existing share repurchase authorization. The new repurchase authorization follows the company's recent announcement to increase its annual dividend per share to 80 from 60 cents. That represents the second increase this fiscal year.

Shares fell 2 percent, or 86 cents, to $41 in after-market trading Thursday, after closing up 62 cents at $41.86.

Top Small Cap Companies To Watch For 2014

Investors may still have the urge to get into small cap stocks, because they are leading the market in 2013. While the run to all-time highs by the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 have dominated the headlines, the small-cap Russell 2000 has them both beat.

Year to date, the Russell 2000 small cap index is up 20.75 percent, compared to 17 percent for the S&P 500 and only 16 percent for the Dow Industrials.

Investors eager to move into small caps at this stage should look at those with improving sales and earnings that are still trading at a reasonable valuation. One choice is specialty diamond and jewelry retailer Zale Corp (NYSE: ZLC). The company achieved earnings growth of 59 percent last quarter and is projected to grow 45 percent in the next year.

Zale Corp reported in the second quarter its highest annual net income in six years. Net earnings were $10 million, or $0.24 per share, compared to a net loss of $27 million, or $0.85 per share, in fiscal year 2012. Zales has continued to increase revenue in recent quarters as its efforts to raise prices, improve core inventory and roll out new branded products appear to have helped lift same-store sales.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Duprey]

    The not-so-great and wonderful OCZ
There was no company-specific news that caused solid-state-drive maker OCZ Technology (NASDAQ: OCZ  ) to fall almost 8% Wednesday. But an article that appeared on Seeking Alpha questioning whether the company had six months or less to live before it filed for bankruptcy seemed to coincide with its fall.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Evan Niu, CFA]

Once upon a time, I was also an OmniVision (NASDAQ: OVTI  ) bull, thinking the image sensor specialist's lead in backside-illuminated technology gave it a substantial leg up against the competition. When OmniVision lost the iPhone 4S primary camera spot to Sony, that was just the first sign that things may never be the same. The company subsequently lost the iPhone 5 primary sensor, also to Sony. HTC has gone with STMicroelectronicsfor the "UltraPixel" sensor in its One flagship (OmniVision sources the secondary sensor), which lends to the idea that BSI sensors are becoming commoditized. Goodbye, pricing power. I gave up on OmniVision long ago.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

In terms of clinical updates, hepatitis-C-focused biotech Achillion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACHN  ) announced updated midstage results for its lead compound, ACH-3102, on Tuesday. In trials of genotype-1b treatment naive patients, ACH-3102 plus a ribavirin delivered a 75% success rate in end-of-treatment virologic response. The problem with these results is that not only is Achillion far behind its all-oral peers in terms of development, but its 75% success rate trailed that of Gilead Sciences' Sofosbuvir, which delivered 100% success rates in some of its late-stage trials featuring genotype-1 patients.

  • [By Keith Speights]

    Hold horrors
Achillion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACHN  ) takes the worst spot this week. Shares plunged 62% on bad news from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Michael Lewis]

Rackspace (NYSE: RAX  ) got slammed in early May after missing analyst estimates. The miss was relatively minor, and normally shouldn't concern investors, but it was management's comments that did the damage.

  • [By Paulo Santos]

Using Equinix (EQIX) and Rackspace Hosting (RAX) as comparables, I was pumped up. CONE was projecting $135 million in EBITDA for 2013 (at the midpoint of guidance). On a $445 million market capitalization with $277.7 million in net debt, it traded at an EV/EBITDA of just 5.4 times. Compare that to EQIX at 13 times or RAX at 15 times. This was a bargain and growing revenues at a 18% clip year-on-year, too, above EQIX's 10% or RAX's 15%.

  • [By Inyoung Hwang]

Stephen Penwell, Morgan Stanley director of North American equity research, says his firm did a report that featured companies whose profit margins had risen even as global economic events such as the European debt crisis had intensified. They included discount chain Dollar General Corp. (DG), DunkinBrands Group Inc. (DNKN) and Web services firm Rackspace Hosting Inc. (RAX)

ALERT > The VIX ticked 11.99 on Friday - WATCH IT…

MARKET

The Dow Jones Industrials and S&P 500 (SPX) had their sixth straight week of price gains however it was another mostly dull week despite new highs for all three major indexes. Last week's volume was below average in the NYSE and slightly above average in the Nasdaq tho it was options expiration. "Price" in the S&P 500 (SPX) remains well above the resistance (now questionable support) of the top trendline of the channel that goes back to 2009. Overboughtness (McClellan) is in Neutral.

My Take

Major stock indexes remain extended and remain in strong uptrends and they keep adding points with hardly a hiccup albeit the gains have been relatively modest week over week. Bullish sentiment has eased over the last week although some indicators are flashing euphoric alerts. I continue to believe that discretion suggests that some $$ should be taken off the table as the market is priced to perfection. The debt ceiling is closing in and the Iran nuclear situation is smoldering on the front burner as they are very close to having nukes and I continue to believe that Israel, in concert with possibly the Saudi's, will act while the USA continues to have its head in the sand. The global debt behemoth, manipulation of interest rates, printing money and debasement of our currency continues unabated. EuroLand is slows with new rate cuts. Oh and the VIX premier gauge of fear ticked 11.99 on Friday. It's a la la land situation where major players seem to believe that we are in a new paradigm and debt means nothing – in effect saying; "let the good times roll – thank you – I'm fine and I'll have another bottle, err - make it two, of tequila." I'm dizzy just watching them getting bombed a la 1999.

Remember the prescient Volker quote;

In my ON THE MARKET report on 7-8-1999 I gave you the 'IT' quote:

"The fate of the world economy is now totally dependent on the growth of the US economy, which is dependant on the stock market, whose growth is dependent on about 50 stocks, half of which have NEVER REPORTED ANY EARNINGS." Said Paul Volker, former Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, who made that statement in the summer of 1999 when the Nasdaq was at 2500.Recall that in October 1998 the Nasdaq traded at 1357. In March 2000 it topped and traded at 5132.

Of Note re IRAN

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called last week's offer to Iran, which incredibly had the support of USA's Secretary of State John Kerry, a "very, very bad deal."

S&P 500

The S&P 500 (SPX) closed Friday at 1798.18 - the prior Friday it was 1770.61

Short term 'Price' support is at 1791 / 1773 /

The a bit further out 1762 / 1746 / 1740 / 1716 / 1646 and 1627

The 200-day moving average support is at 1637

5 Rocket Stocks to Buy as Mr. Market Climbs

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Ugh, I wouldn't want to be Larry Summers this morning. The former Treasury secretary set off a rally in stock futures yesterday, when he withdrew his name from the Fed Chairman job. The market has voted: Investors hate Larry Summers.

>>Why Wall Street Got Apple Wrong

But don't worry too much about Larry. It's probably safe to say he's got a thick skin.

Instead, investors should be paying attention to the market's reaction. As I write just ahead of the open this morning, equities are pointed at some serious follow-through this Monday. That's a big deal after a technically-significant bounce that slingshotted stocks 1.98% higher last week. And it's creating some buying opportunities this week. To make the most of them, we're turning to a new set of Rocket Stocks. >>5 Stocks Ready for Breakouts For the uninitiated, "Rocket Stocks" are our list of companies with short-term gain catalysts and longer-term growth potential. To find them, I run a weekly quantitative screen that seeks out stocks with a combination of analyst upgrades and positive earnings surprises to identify rising analyst expectations, a bullish signal for stocks in any market. After all, where analysts' expectations are increasing, institutional cash often follows. In the last 214 weeks, our weekly list of five plays has outperformed the S&P 500 by 88.85%. Without further ado, here's a look at this week's Rocket Stocks.

2013 has been a stellar year for shares of oil service giant Schlumberger (SLB). Since the calendar flipped over to January, SLB has rallied more than 25%, beating the broad market's impressive pace by double digits. As oil prices linger on the high end of their historic range, SLB is well positioned to keep ticking higher.

>>5 Big Trades to Take Schlumberger provides must-have services to national and supermajor oil firms as well as smaller E&Ps, offering up niche services like seismic surveys and well drilling and positioning. In a nutshell, SLB's job is to pull oil out of the ground as efficiently as possible. Oil firms turn to Schlumberger because the tasks they need to accomplish are too nuanced or proprietary to pull off in-house. So as long as the company continues to pour cash into R&D for drilling technology and software, the firm should continue to score lucrative contracts. Some of Schlumberger's most attractive opportunities right now come from overseas. The firm is one of the largest oil servicers in Russia, a key growth market in the years ahead. It's also got an important presence in smaller oil markets, where it's a big fish in a small pond. A big scale and stellar reputation should guarantee Schlumberger an attractive piece of the oil pie for years to come.

It's been a challenging year for Yahoo! (YHOO), but you wouldn't know it from this stock's price action. Yahoo! has rallied more than 47% year-to-date, buoyed by major changes in the firm's structure -- and conspicuous leadership from CEO Marissa Mayer. But Yahoo!'s new logo is a good metaphor for the transformation at the company: The new logo was announced with much excitement, but most users probably wouldn't have noticed it otherwise.

>>5 Stocks With Big Insider Buying Arguably paying too much for Tumblr, and still lacking a real unique selling proposition the new Yahoo! looks way too much like the old Yahoo!. But while this stock built a reputation for being a dot-com era dinosaur, investors neglected the fact that this stock has had a really attractive business all along. Despite some big missteps, Yahoo! remains one of the biggest destinations on the internet, and all those eyes on its Web sites contribute to hefty net profit margins from operations. Yahoo!'s cash position has been a blessing and a curse for investors in the last few years. A brilliant investment in Alibaba has contributed to a cash and investment position of more than $7.6 billion at last count, covering more than a quarter of YHOO's market cap. While that does help to reduce risk, Yahoo! either needs to figure out internal investments that yield meaningful rates of return, or give the money back to shareholders. Just don't underestimate this stock's potential in 2013; Yahoo! may be a dinosaur, but at least it's a T-Rex.

$20 billion grocery store chain Kroger (KR) has seen some surprising upside of its own this year: shares have climbed 50% since the first trading day in January. That performance may seem surprising for a 130 year old large-cap grocer, but this stock's rally has been predicated on out-executing the competition for years now.

>>6 Stocks Rising on Unusual Volume Kroger operates more than 2,400 supermarkets, 750 convenience stores, and 325 jewelry stores under a handful of popular brands. Those marquees include Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Kwik Shop and Turkey Hill in addition to the firm's namesake chain. An ongoing acquisition plan for Harris Teeter stands to add another powerhouse grocery chain to KR's portfolio this year, adding even more separation between Kroger and its most well known competitors. The grocery business is characterized by paper thin margins and zero competitive advantages. Kroger changed that by offering fuel as loss leader to pull in customers at around half of its locations. While many peers have copied that strategy, the existence of gas infrastructure at such a large percentage of its locations gives Kroger some built-in advantages. In many cases, rivals don't have the option to add fuel to as many of their own stores. From there, huge private label presence on Kroger's shelves help spur bigger margins than the rest of the industry. With rising analyst sentiment in Kroger this week, we're betting on shares.

As badly as short sellers want to hate on Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), betting against the multiyear rally in this $12.7 billion beverage stock has been about as wise as eating from a box with a skull and crossbones on it. And as a bull market continues to lift all ships, Green Mountain's ship is going to keep floating above the others.

>>5 Earnings Short-Squeeze Plays Green Mountain owns Keurig, the brand of beverage brewers that use self-contained K-Cups to make coffee, teas, and other drinks. While Keurig's "fad" status has certainly helped tip the deck against GMCR, the fact remains that the firm has done most of the hard work in getting Keurig machines accepted by consumers. With brewers essentially ubiquitous at this point, the firm is able to make money on its cash cow: the K-Cups. Keurig's individual-serving cups have big margins and a big installed base. With huge convenience and the relatively large sunk cost that consumers have put into their Keurig machines, it's a sticky business with big switching costs. Consumers who buy a Keurig are much less likely to spend the money on a competing brand of proprietary coffee pods. I've said before that GMCR is far from cheap right now. But its momentum trajectory is showing few signs of fizzling out, especially as direct competitors such as Starbucks (SBUX) continue to sell K-Cups of their own. Don't bet against GMCR in September - buy this Rocket Stock instead.

Last, but certainly not least, is Polaris Industries (PII), the power sports equipment manufacturer. In short, Polaris makes toys -- toys for grown ups. The firm's namesake brand manufactures ATVs and snowmobiles, and it also owns storied motorcycle brands Victory and Indian, and GEM light electric vehicles. With more than 1,650 dealers in North American alone, Polaris owns a significant chunk of the power sports industry, churning out more than $3.2 billion in sales last year, and net profit margins approaching 10%.

Economic recovery is fueling a boom market for Polaris' vehicles, especially now that rates continue to hover near their historic floor. Borrowing money is cheap, and that means that financing a motorcycle or ATV has become more affordable than ever before. With relatively low acquisition costs, buying one of Polaris' machines is a lot easier to stomach than many other recreation options, and so sales continue to look attractive this year. Financially, Polaris is in solid shape. The firm carries nearly $280 million in cash and investments on its balance sheet, easily offsetting $107.6 million in total debt. PII is well positioned to run over any economic hiccups in the foreseeable future -- and with rising analyst sentiment in shares, we're betting on this name this week. Why Investing in Australia May Be for You

Print Friendly

Many U.S. investors overlook the benefits of investing in Australia. That’s mainly because the country is far away from Wall Street (13 time zones, to be exact), so it flies below the radar of the American business press.

However, the Land Down Under boasts a number of important advantages that few other countries can match. For example, the country is sitting on a treasure trove of natural resources, and it’s ideally located to sell them into growing Asian markets.

Investing in Australia: A Great Way to Tap Into China’s Growth

According to the CIA World Factbook, China is Australia’s largest export market, taking in 29.5% of the goods the country ships abroad, followed by Japan (19.3%), South Korea (8%) and India (4.9%).

Australia is best known as the world’s leading iron ore producer. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Australia’s mines churned out 525 million metric tons of iron ore in 2012. That’s well ahead of No. 2 producer Brazil, with 375 million, and up 191% from 180 million metric tons in 2001. The production gains have come in lockstep with China’s growing demand for steel as it continues to urbanize. (Iron ore is an important element in steelmaking.)

However, Australia’s resource wealth goes beyond iron ore and includes coal, gold and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The country is currently the world’s third-largest LNG producer, according to the International Energy Agency, behind Qatar and Malaysia. However, it has more new LNG facilities under construction than any other nation.

Political and Economic Stability Adds to the Appeal of Investing in Australia

Thanks in part to its resource wealth, Australia was the only major country to avoid a recession in 2008-2009, and its stock market was one of the first to rebound, posting gains of nearly 130% in U.S. dollar terms from early March to mid-October 2009.

(One of our favorite things about investing in Australia is its companies’ tendency to pay outsized dividends. You can get our five top Australian dividend picks from David Dittman, chief investment strategist of our Australian Edge advisory, in our free report, “The 5 Best Australian Dividend Stocks to Buy Now.” Click here to download your free copy right away.)

The result of the recent Australian election offers another reason to be bullish. “Australia has entered what its citizens and businesses believe is a period of tranquility with the election of new Prime Minister Tony Abbott and his Liberal-National Coalition government,” reported Dittman in an October 11, 2013, Australian Edge article.

“This follows years of Labor Party infighting that saw two separate coups d’état, one where Julia Gillard toppled Kevin Rudd in 2010, and one where Mr. Rudd returned the favor in mid-2013 in the run-up to the election that resulted in a change of government.”

Investing in Australia Has Never Been Simpler

There are a number of ways for U.S. investors to tap into Australia’s improving prospects. For example, you could buy shares of Australian companies directly, including the 14 listed in our Australian Edge Conservative Portfolio and the 12 in our Aggressive Portfolio.

Several high-quality U.S. brokers offer U.S. investors direct access to major exchanges, including the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), the country’s main equities market. That means you can buy and sell stocks just like you would on the NYSE or the Nasdaq.

In addition, many Australian companies trade on U.S. exchanges as American Depositary Receipts (ADRs). Diversified Australian miner BHP Billiton Ltd. (ASX: BHP, NYSE: BHP) is one example. Each BHP ADR represents two ordinary, ASX-listed shares of the company.

Another option is to buy units of an Australian exchange traded fund (ETF) like the iShares MSCI Australia Index Fund (NYSE: EWA), one of the investments we cover in Australian Edge’s How They Rate universe, which keeps over 100 Australian companies and other investments under continuous review.

The ETF aims to track the price and yield performance of publicly traded securities in the Australian market. Its top 10 holdings, from largest to smallest, consist of Commonwealth Bank of Australia, BHP Billiton, Westpac Banking Corp., Australia and New Zealand Banking Group, National Australia Bank Ltd., Wesfarmers Ltd., Woolworths Ltd., CSL Ltd., Rio Tinto and Woodside Petroleum.

The fund is heavily weighted toward financial firms, with 50.6% of its assets devoted to that sector, followed by materials (18.7%), consumer staples (9.0%), energy (5.8%) and industrials (5.0%). The ETF’s expense ratio is a low 0.49%.

This Is My Favorite Kind of Money

My favorite kind of money does three things.

First, it grows. And it keeps growing every single year - by double digits.

Second, and unlike most corporate profits, it only gets taxed once.

And third, it's "lean." The businesses paying my favorite kind of money are very sensitive to cost, while retaining virtually no earnings. After all, they have to pass through nearly all their income to investors.

Few investments give you all three of these benefits, of course. That's what makes the shares below so attractive.

First, let's look at each of my "favorite money factors" more closely...

Factor No. 1 Double-Digit Growth Financial planners like to put you in one of two camps:

The "growth camp," which they say is right for younger investors, and the "income camp," which they say is proper for retirees and those close to retirement.

As we've said before, don't believe it. In reality, growth and income are inseparable.

There's only one reliable way to make 10% or more a year... especially now, in a rising interest rate environment.

We have to seek total return. For me, this means targeting companies that: generate decent current income, around 5% to 10% a year, and
support that income with strong underlying business fundamentals... resulting in another 5% to 10% of capital appreciation.

So, seeking yield alone is dangerous. It can suck you into bad investments. After all, a high yield is high for a reason.

Factor No. 2 A Brilliant Tax Structure

My favorite kind of money comes directly to me, and it doesn't make any stops along the way, either. That's why I like master limited partnerships (MLPs), real estate investment trusts (REITs), business development corporations (BDCs), and private equity firms.

You see, all of these companies are organized as pass-through entities. They're set up differently than traditional public corporations. While traditional corporate structures are designed to retain earnings, pass-through entities such as these are designed to funnel at least 90% of their earnings directly to shareholders.

And you'll get to keep far more of your pass-through profits, too.

For shareholders, pass-through securities offer the limited liability protection of traditional corporations, but without the infamous double tax bite you'd normally take from Uncle Sam.

Because pass-through securities' cash flow is paid out to shareholders - without corporate tax - and is only taxed once at the partner level.

The reason for this is due to the legal structure of pass-through securities, which, as I've mentioned, are set up to distribute at least 90% of their earnings directly to shareholders or unitholders.

This single taxation, as opposed to the double taxation on traditional corporations, means dividend payouts from pass-through entities are bigger - much bigger. As we'll see, this makes many of their annual dividend yields much more attractive.

How these entities treattheir own money is pretty impressive, too.

Factor No. 3 Highly Efficient Management

Because these companies are obligated to distribute some 90% of their earnings to unitholders, there is little in the way of retained earnings left... for management to spend on perks such as private jets and $500,000 holiday parties. This forces MLPs to be lean and efficient, compared to traditional corporations, fat with cash.

Because of lower taxes, cash-producing assets such as oil wells become more profitable under MLP ownership than corporate ownership. Many MLPs take advantage of their favorable tax structure by buying oil wells from energy companies barely making money on these wells after-tax.

You'll love the yield, too.

Of course, the most attractive aspect of pass-through securities is their outstanding yields. While most energy stocks offer yields of about 3%, most of the biggest energy MLPs offer yields in the 8% to 10% range. This kind of yield is something that's attractive to most investors, especially those who are focused on generating income from their existing assets.

I remember the 1980s, when Congress first approved the use of MLP structure in energy exploration and production firms. I knew then, as now, that this unique approach had a bright, and profitable, future ahead of it. It wasn't long after approval that other companies in other industries made the move to become pass-through entities. The tax advantages alone made sure that happened. And three decades later, we have much more to choose from: MLPs, REITs, BDCs, and private equities.

Best Casino Companies To Own For 2014

They're different securities, of course, but they're all my favorite kind of money.

What I'm Looking at Right Now

These shares all represent MLPs, REITS, BDCs, and private equity. There are plenty of great investments in this group, but these are my very favorites:

Vornado Realty Trust (NYSE: VNO)

Teekay LNG Partners L.P. (NYSE: TGP)

Kinder Morgan Energy Partners L.P. (NYSE: KMP)

The Blackstone Group L.P. (NYSE: BX)

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P. (NYSE: KKR)

10 Best Insurance Stocks For 2014

Berkshire Annual Shareholder Letter:

hat assured by the general volatility of the stock market, by the concentration of our equity holdings in just a few companies, and by certain business decisions we have made, most especially our move to commit large resources to super-catastrophe insurance."

We not only accept this volatility but welcome it: "A tolerance for short-term swings improves our long-term prospects. In baseball lingo, our performance yardstick is slugging percentage, not batting average./p>

Warren Buffett once said, iversification is protection against ignorance. It makes little sense if you know what you are doing./p>

Humans love diversification and this can be attributed to the diversification bias, as we do not like to lose an option even if the option was a bad one. Sometimes less is more and quality is better than quantity. Risk is not adequately reduced by further diversifying your stock market holdings as they are all susceptible to the same systematic risks (depending on credit class). Diversification would not have been able to entirely save you from October 2007 to March 2009 (during the credit crisis) the S&P500 declined 57%. While many companies did close their doors for good, many survived and have thrived in the new environment.

Insurance Products

The Insurance Products segment offers a range of protection products and services aimed at serving the financial needs of its customers throughout their lives. These pro! ducts are sold to individuals and corporations, as well as other institutions and their respective employees. It is organized in three businesses: Group Life, Individual Life and Non-Medical Health.

The Group Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, and term life products. It offer group insurance products as employer-paid benefits or as voluntary benefits where all or a portion of the premiums are paid by the employee. These group products and services also include employee paid supplemental life and are offered as standard products or may be tailored to meet specific customer needs.

The Individual Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, term life and whole life products. Additionally, through its broker-dealer affiliates, it offers a full range of mutual funds and other securities products. The products within both Group Life and Individual Life include Variable Life, Universal Life, Term Life and Whole Life. Variable life products provide insurance coverage through a contract that gives the policyholder the policyholder flexibility in investment choices and, depending on the product, in premium payments and coverage amounts, with certain guarantees. With variable life products, premiums and account balances can be directed by the policyholder into a variety of separate account investment options or directed to the Company general account. In the separate account investment options, the policyholder bears the entire risk of the investment results.

Universal life products provide insurance coverage on the same basis as variable life, except that premiums, and the resulting accumulated balances, are allocated only to the Company general account. Universal life products may allow the insured to increase or decrease the amount of death benefit coverage over the term of the contract and the owner to adjust the frequency and amount of premium payments.

Term life products provid! e a guara! nteed benefit upon the death of the insured for a specified time period in return for the periodic payment of premiums. Specified coverage periods range from one year to 30 years, but in no event are they longer than the period over, which premiums are paid. Death benefits may be level over the period or decreasing. Decreasing coverage is used principally to provide for loan repayment in the event of death. Premiums may be guaranteed at a level amount for the coverage period or may be non-level and non-guaranteed. Term insurance products are sometimes referred to as pure protection products, in that there are typically no savings or investment elements. Term contracts expire without value at the end of the coverage period when the insured party is still living.

Whole life products provide a guaranteed benefit upon the death of the insured in return for the periodic payment of a fixed premium over a predetermined period. Premium payments may be required for the entire life of the contract period, to a specified age or period, and may be level or change in accordance with a predetermined schedule. Whole life insurance includes policies that provide a participation feature in the form of dividends. Policyholders may receive dividends in cash or apply them to increase death benefits, increase cash values available upon surrender or reduce the premiums required to maintain the contract in-force.

The Non-Medical Health products and services include dental insurance, group short- and long-term disability, individual disability income, long-term care (LTC), critical illness and accidental death & dismemberment coverage. Other products and services include employer-sponsored auto and homeowners insurance provided through the Auto & Home segment and prepaid legal plans. The Company also sells administrative services-only (ASO) arrangements to some employers. The products in this area are Dental, Disability and Long-term Care (LTC). Dental products provide insurance and ASO plans that ass! ist emplo! yees, retirees and their families in maintaining oral health while reducing out-of-pocket expenses and providing superior customer service. Dental plans include the Preferred Dentist Program and the Dental Health Maintenance Organization. Disability products provide a benefit in the event of the disability of the insured. This benefit is in the form of monthly income paid until the insured reaches age 65. In addition to income replacement, the product may be used to provide for the payment of business overhead expenses for disabled business owners or mortgage payment protection. This is offered on both a group and individual basis. LTC products provide protection against the potentially high costs of LTC services. They generally pay benefits to insureds that need assistance with activities of daily living or have a cognitive impairment.

Retirement Products

The Retirement products segment includes a variety of variable and fixed annuities that are primarily sold to individuals and employees of corporations and other institutions. The products in this area are Variable Annuities and Fixed Annuities. Variable annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Variable annuities allow the contract holder to make deposits into various investment options in a separate account, as determined by the contract holder. The risks associated with such investment options are borne entirely by the contract holder, except where guaranteed minimum benefits are involved.

Fixed annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Fixed annuities do not allow the same investment flexibility provided by variable annuities, but provide guarantees related to the preservation of principal and interest credited.

Corporate Benefit Funding

The Corporate Benefit Funding segment includes a range of annuity and investment products, including, guaranteed interest products and other stable value products, income annuitie! s, and se! parate account contracts for the investment management of defined benefit and defined contribution plan assets. This segment also includes certain products to fund postretirement benefits and company, bank or trust owned life insurance used to finance non-qualified benefit programs for executives. The products in this area are Stable Value Products, Pensions Closeouts, Torts and Settlements, Capital Markets Investment Products and other Corporate Benefit Funding Products and Services. The Company offers general account guaranteed interest contracts, separate account guaranteed interest contracts, and similar products used to support the stable value option of defined contribution plans. It also offers private floating rate funding agreements that are used for money market funds, securities lending cash collateral portfolios and short-term investment funds.

It also offers partial risk transfer solutions that allow for partial transfers of pension liabilities and annuity products that include single premium buyouts. It offers strategies for complex litigation settlements, primarily structured settlement annuities. Under the Capital Markets Investment Products, the products offered include funding agreements, Federal Home Loan Bank advances and funding agreement-backed commercial paper. Under the Other Corporate Benefit Funding Products and Services, it offers specialized insurance products designed specifically to provide solutions for non-qualified benefit and retiree benefit funding purposes.

Auto & Home

The Auto & Home segment includes personal lines property and casualty insurance offered directly to employees at their employer worksite, as well as to individuals through a variety of retail distribution channels, including independent agents, property and casu! alty spec! ialists, direct response marketing and the individual distribution sales group. Auto & Home primarily sells auto insurance, which represented 67% of Auto & Home total net earned premiums in 2011. Homeowners and other insurance represented 33% of Auto & Home total net earned premiums in 2011. The products in this area are Auto Coverages and Homeowners and Other Coverages. Auto insurance policies provide coverage for private passenger automobiles, utility automobiles and vans, motorcycles, motor homes, antique or classic automobiles and trailers. Auto & Home offers traditional coverage, such as liability, uninsured motorist, no fault or personal injury protection, as well as collision and comprehensive. Homeownersinsurance policies provide protection for homeowners, renters, condominium owners and residential landlords against losses arising out of damage to dwellings and contents from a variety of perils, as well as coverage for liability arising from ownership or occupancy. Other insurance includes personal excess liability (protection against losses in excess of amounts covered by other liability insurance policies), and coverage for recreational vehicles and boat owners. Most of Auto & Home homeownerspolicies are traditional insurance policies for dwellings, providing protection for loss on a replacement cost basis. These policies also provide additional coverage for reasonable, normal living expenses incurred by policyholders that have been displaced from their homes.

International

International provides life insurance, accident and health insurance, credit insurance, annuities, endowment and retirement & savings products to both individuals and groups. The Company focuses on markets primarily within Japan, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East. It operates in international markets through subsidiaries and affiliates. It operates in 35 countries in Europe and the Middle East with operations in Poland, the United Kingdom, France, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as through a consolidated joint venture in India.

Mortgage products offered by MetLife Bank include forward and reverse residential mortgage loans. Residential mortgage loans are originated through MetLife Bank national sales force, mortgage brokers and mortgage correspondents. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Amanda Alix]

When megainsurance company MetLife (NYSE: MET  ) finally closed the saleof its retail banking operations to General Electric's (NYSE: GE  ) GE Capital this past January, enabling it to deregister as a bank, it likely heaved a figurative sigh of relief. The insurer had jumped through many regulatory hoops in order to get this deal done and free itself of tighter controls being levied on any entity that includes a banking platform.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.5% to 15,545.75, led by big drops in Visa –down 3.5% after releasing disappointing earnings–JPMorgan Chase–off 2% after it and other large banks were sued by Fannie Mae–and American Express (AXP), which fell 1.6% to $81.80. The S&P 500 fell 0.4% to 1,756.54, as Avon (AVP) plunged 22% on bad earnings and the likelihood of a larger-than-expected settlement with the SEC, and MetLife (MET) dipped 3.5% on disappointing earns and said it would no longer offering future guidance.

  • [By Matthew Smith]

Although we were not surprised by the move yesterday we did not take an overly aggressive stance in positioning the portfolio to benefit from the Fed not tapering. We were long, but we did not initiate any trades solely for the purpose to benefit from the announcement. We are more interested in the long-term wealth building of portfolios right now and as such believe that readers should look to our recent winners that had pullbacks yesterday as buying opportunities. Specifically, we like Ameritrade (AMTD), Charles Schwab (SCHW) and MetLife (MET) which all saw pullbacks ranging from 2.5% to a bit over 5.5% in yesterday's session. We highlighted the discount brokers as a sector to watch right before the latest takeoff and our belief is that although rates remain unchanged the brokerage business will continue to perform strongly. The next big move up will be as rates rise, but even if one has to wait for this move it will be well worth it for one's portfolio.

I have heard many people comment about the insurance policies for cars, houses, life, assets, etc. The arguments always revolve around the same issue: Is it really necessary? What are the chances to be hit by a Hurricane, or to meet a sudden death? Well, nobody really knows. Some individuals however, sleep better when they know a policy backs their life investments. Here, I will look into three insurance companies that concentrate on different policies, or geographies. These are: China Life (LFC), and Conseco (CNO).

10 Best Insurance Stocks For 2014: MGIC Investment Corp (MTG)

MGIC Investment Corporation (MGIC), incorporated June 21, 1984, is a holding company and through wholly owned subsidiaries is a private mortgage insurer in the United States. As of December 31, 2012, its principal mortgage insurance subsidiaries, Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation (MGIC) and MGIC Indemnity Corporation (MIC), were each licensed in all 50 states of the United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. During the year ending December 31, 2012, the Company wrote new insurance in each of those jurisdictions in MGIC and/or MIC. The Company capitalized MIC to write new insurance in certain jurisdictions where MGIC no longer meets, and is unable to obtain a waiver of, those jurisdictionsminimum capital requirements. Private mortgage insurance covers losses from homeowner defaults on residential mortgage loans, reducing and, in some instances, eliminating the loss to the insured institution if the homeowner defaults.

Mortgage Insurance

Primary insurance provides mortgage default protection on individual loans and covers unpaid loan principal, delinquent interest and certain expenses associated with the default and subsequent foreclosure. Primary insurance is written on first mortgage loans secured by owner occupied single-family homes, which are one-to-four family homes and condominiums. Primary insurance is also written on first liens secured by non-owner occupied single-family homes, which are referred to in the home mortgage lending industry as investor loans, and on vacation or second homes. Primary coverage can be used on any type of residential mortgage loan instrument approved by the mortgage insurer.

When a borrower refinances a mortgage loan insured by the Company by paying it off in full with the proceeds of a new mortgage that is also insured by it, the insurance on that existing mortgage is cancelled, and insurance on the new mortgage is considered to be new primary insurance written. Therefore, continuation of its coverage fr! om a refinanced loan to a new loan results in both a cancellation of insurance and new insurance written. When a lender and borrower modify a loan rather than replace it with a new one, or enter into a new loan pursuant to a loan modification program, its insurance continues without being cancelled assuming that the Company consent to the modification or new loan.

The borrower mortgage loan instrument requires the borrower to pay the mortgage insurance premium. There are several payment plans available to the borrower, or lender, as the case may be. Under the monthly premium plan, the borrower or lender pays it a monthly premium payment to provide only one month of coverage. Under the annual premium plan, an annual premium is paid to it in advance, and it earns and recognizes the premium over the next 12 months of coverage, with annual renewal premiums paid in advance thereafter and earned over the subsequent 12 months of coverage. Under the single premium plan, the borrower or lender pays it a single payment covering a specified term exceeding twelve months.

Pool insurance is used as an additional credit enhancement for certain secondary market mortgage transactions. Pool insurance covers the excess of the loss on a defaulted mortgage loan which exceeds the claim payment under the primary coverage, if primary insurance is required on that mortgage loan, as well as the total loss on a defaulted mortgage loan which did not require primary insurance. Pool insurance is used as an additional credit enhancement for certain secondary market mortgage transactions. Pool insurance covers the excess of the loss on a defaulted mortgage loan, which exceeds the claim payment under the primary coverage, if primary insurance is required on that mortgage loan, as well as the total loss on a defaulted mortgage loan which did not require primary insurance. In general, the loans insured by it in Wall Street bulk transactions consisted of loans with reduced underwriting documentation; cash out! refinanc! es, which exceed the standard underwriting requirements of the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) (collectively GSEs); A- loans; subprime loans, and jumbo loans.

Other Products and Services

The Company has participated in risk sharing arrangements with the GSEs and captive mortgage reinsurance arrangements with subsidiaries of certain mortgage lenders, which reinsure a portion of the risk on loans originated or serviced by the lenders, which have MGIC primary insurance. It provides information regarding captive mortgage reinsurance arrangements to the New York Department of Insurance (known as the New York Department of Financial Services), the Minnesota Department of Commerce and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, (HUD). It performs contract underwriting services for lenders, in which it judges whether the data relating to the borrower and the loan contained in the lender mortgage loan application file comply with the lender loan underwriting guidelines. It also provides an interface to submit data to the automated underwriting systems of the GSEs, which independently judge the data. These services are provided for loans, which require private mortgage insurance, as well as for loans that do not require private mortgage insurance. It provides mortgage services for the mortgage finance industry, such as portfolio retention and secondary marketing of mortgages.

The Company competes with Federal Housing Administration, Veterans Administration, PMI Mortgage Insurance Company, Genworth Mortgage Insurance Corporation, United Guaranty Residential Insurance Company, Radian Guaranty Inc., CMG Mortgage Insurance Company, and Essent Guaranty, Inc.

Question: Have you ever looked at buying Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)(BRK.B)? If so, what do you think is the best way to value the company?

We recently purchased Berkshire Hathaway for the second time in our history when the stock fell near book value. The appraisal is based on a sum of the parts analysis which has become more relevant as the non-insurance businesses have become a larger part of the company. Berkshire capital strength, investment success, and underwriting knowledge provide an advantage in the insurance businesses, which comprise just over half of our appraisal. The competitively entrenched operating companies include the railroad, Burlington Northern, the utility and pipeline business, MidAmerican, and a number of smaller companies. We have superior partners not only in Warren Buffett, but also in the next level of management responsible for the different pieces. His recent share repurchase reflects his view that the stock is discounted. Additionally, the board is structured to insure a consistent approach and culture long past Buffett tenure.
